It's rainy and cloudy today, Thursday, so here is a post about last Thursday, when my walking group went to a little village called Steveston, which is situated at the head of the delta of the south arm of the "mighty" Fraser River. It's about 30 minutes from where I live at the head of the delta of the north arm of said river. This river is subject to flooding at times. It's extremely flat and Steveston and the surrounding area of Richmond are on a large island within the flood plain, so they have built up a pathway around the land, called "the dyke" road, which is enjoyed by cyclists and pedestrians alike. So on a nice Thursday, a couple of times a year we will go there to walk on the dyke. There are spectacular views of the mountains, both on the mainland and on Vancouver Island but it was very hazy that day so my shots are of some different things I saw on this walk.
Some ducks and turtles resting on a wooden float in amongst the water lilies. This is a canal on one side of the dyke path.
Looking towards Vancouver Island, out there in the haze
So I'm off to the Granville Island walk in a few moments but I'm not expecting photographic gems from there today although I will take my camera.

That's quite a nice walking group excursion.
You take such wonderful photographs! I feel like I have taken the walk. Love the cows and the description of the Steveston farm - wonderful that they are preserving the line of seeds that way.
I am coming to Surrey, British Columbia for the writer's conference in October. Is that very far from you? What sort of weather can I expect do you think?
JMB, I never knew what those cows were called. I always just call them the stripey cows.
I actually did the "eight random things" blog a while back, but I wrote it about my husband. I'm not good at fllowing meme rules!

Oooh what beautiful pics!
I love this, it looks like just the prettiest place; our local undertaker has converted the old driv-in theatre into a little cattle paddock, they are your belted cows!!! I often meant to ask him what they were, now I know.
These pics are so dreamy!!
Thanks JMB
Pam
Great pics and top place to walk by the looks of it. Enjoy your walk. :)
Hi Rhea,
It is a very nice place for us to walk but it is quite far for us to drive there so we tend to do it only when the weather is good.
Thanks for stopping by.
Hi Lady Mac,
I've emailed you about the writers'conference. I do hope we can link up when you are here.
Thanks for the kind words about the post.

Hi Voyager,
I had to google the cows with the belt as I called them and then I discovered all this stuff about the Steves.
I saw your post and commented on it as I recall.

Hi Sienna,
This is a very beautiful spot.
I can't believe you have some of these Belted Galloways near you. You can impress your neighbour with your knowledge.

Hi Lee,
Steveston is a very nice place for a walk, but only on a fine day. Since it is so exposed it is often very windy.
thanks for the good wishes.

I do love a walk and really enjoyed seeing your photos of yours. What stunning water lilies! Hope your walk went well today and you managed to take a few photos.
Nice pictures and nice post.
I agree with Lady MacLeod, what lovely pictures and, as a keen walker, I would loved to have joined you.
Gosh these are beautiful shots Jmb of Steveston! I too like the water lilies and the pond is gorgeous.
My dad had Galloway's for years but not the belted ones, just the white ones. I never knew they came striped too. We had striped pigs though...wonder if they were related lol.
You do go to some interesting places Jmb and it's always a pleasure to see your photos.
Hi Ruth,
Thanks for the kind words. You often take me on a walk in your part of the world, so I am returning the favour.

Hi Ellee, I'm not in your class as a walker, but we do five miles on our Granville Island walk so that's not bad for the "old girls".

Hi Janice,
I didn't know what these cows were and had to google them. Cows with white belts I asked and sure enough I got a result. I never knew they came in plain! Striped pigs?

Lovely photos as a;ways, jmb. I am fascinated by the belted cows!
I grew up in Richmond (Steveston is a section in the south west corner of Richmond) and it always fascinates me when people do posts on "my" home area. Now I live just south of Steveston and it takes me about 15 minutes to get there - I often go there for lunch with the girls or just poke around the little shops. You can also buy fish right off the boats at the dock. On July 1, there's the big Salmon Festival and a parade in the area, too. When I was a little girl, we used to be able to smell the fish canneries when the wind was just right. It really is an interesting little corner of the world.
Steveston is so kwel.. there used to be a great chandelry there as well.
Hi WCLC,
Aren't the cows really neat. I've seen them for years but only when I put up the photo did I google them and find out what they were.

Hi Leslie,
Did you live in Steveston? Richmond is a very big area but Steveston is a special little part of it. There was no one selling fish the day I took these photos but there usually is. Everyone was dining out in the sunshine. Lovely day, lovely spot.

Hi MSW,
I didn't know about the chandelry. Maybe it's still there and I've never noticed.
