PAPER
So many of my photos on this blog come from Granville Island. Last Thursday, when we walked there, planning for this theme, I thought I would probably get some photos from a wonderful paper shop, Paper-Ya, which sells handmade and specialty papers and related items. I took a photo of the outside of the store and walked in with my camera. Immediately a store person approached me and said no photographs. I said I would not use flash, but she was adamant. After some discussion I retreated. I have bought a lot of paper and paper products in there over the years, including the special handmade parchment that my daughter's wedding guests signed eleven years ago. I'll think twice about being a customer there in the future.
My friend reminded me of a paper artist who is sometimes in the market and sure enough he was there at his table. He was sitting cutting designs with his cutting tool and discretely I took a photo of his wares but he noticed and called out, "Will you send me a copy?" What a difference. Please photograph my art! I took a few shots and hoped that some of them would be good since I wanted to please this gracious man by sending him a good photo. I asked for his card which he carefully folded for me and which showcases his technique and he asked me to email a photo. May I present ndavid, paper artist. I am a soap-maker. I make soap from scratch. Let me tell you, I have met some others that practice my craft who are MISERABLE, and others who are terrific!
Your photos of Mr. David's work are just PERFECT for the theme! I especially LOVE the train in the second photo. His work is so beautiful and a delight to see!
Oh, and like you, I think the other store wouldn't be seeing me much anymore after that cold shoulder....

Wow. David sure makes beautiful paper art.
I do get objections from sales people and owners when I want to take a picture of their shops or wares. Usually I would walk out and if I had been their customer, I would not go back again.
It's not like I'm copying or stealing their ideas. Their products are printed on sales brochures and some even on their website.
They do miss an opportunity to showcase their products.

These photos reminded me of myself... haha. I did quite a number to 3D cards for certain special occasions during my younger days. I did some paper architecture of flowers too with won me a few awards. Unfortunately that was years ago and I can't get hold of the photos or else I would have shared them out with all the photohunters. Nice shots here...love them all :)

I liked the paper cut outs. I used to like to make those snowflake cut outs when you fold the paper and make symmetrical patterns.

What a miserable lot they are in the paper store! I hope you will boycott it and that they will read this. However, the gentleman in the market seems charming and his work is so intricate and pretty.
I never cease to be amazed by the sheer stupidity of people! If you are running a shop, serving the public, wanting their money - why would you behave in such an ungracious manner? I would rethink going back as well.
On the other hand, the photographs of the artist's work are wonderful. I love people who are creative don't you? There is a shop in San Francisco that sells cards like that, hand made and lovely.

JMB, I love Paper-Ya, and it's always one of the shops I visit when I go to Granville Island, but I can't believe how rude they were to you! Thank you for sharing Mr. David's work. I'm going to look for him the next time I'm there.

Paper-Ya have made a bad mistake. How miserable! But ndavid's work is beautiful and he is obviously a charming man. A pity he doesn't have a website we could visit.
I think that is a great story. I also think it's a total shame that paper ya doesn't want to promote their work...

Mmmm there is something "about" paper...
I used to have a housemate in a very large mixed house who was a schoolteacher.
I remember how excited she got at the beginning of autumn term buying all new coloured pens etc etc...
So I asked her and she admitted how she loved stationery.
Then it dawned on me that so do I and probably so do most people (I mean: what is it people most commonly "appropriate" from work?!)... it's just an "interest" we never seem to talk about!
Know what I mean...
I feel like I can spend all day in stationary (sp?) stores!
It's a shame about that first shop.
This is just way cool, one of the best uses for paper.

I would think twice about going back too, particularly seeing you've been a "regular" over the years, and explained your reasons for wanting to take some photos...and I know you would have explained your side well, jmb. Some people are just mean-spirited...they can't help themselves! ;)

Haven't been around for a while (which is why this comment is so late!) and didn't do a Photo Hunt entry for this subject but had planned to take a picture of one of Mr David's cards, purchased from him a few years back, which belongs to my daughter and sits very nicely on her mantelpiece. It is very similar to the one on the extreme left of the second photo.
Sharing with us your experience is our pleasure because we learn something and encourage us to continue doing things we love to do.For now I am using Epson Premium Glossy Photo as my material.Try also using it you might love the result too.
