PAPER
So many of my photos on this blog come from Granville Island. Last Thursday, when we walked there, planning for this theme, I thought I would probably get some photos from a wonderful paper shop, Paper-Ya, which sells handmade and specialty papers and related items. I took a photo of the outside of the store and walked in with my camera. Immediately a store person approached me and said no photographs. I said I would not use flash, but she was adamant. After some discussion I retreated. I have bought a lot of paper and paper products in there over the years, including the special handmade parchment that my daughter's wedding guests signed eleven years ago. I'll think twice about being a customer there in the future.

My friend reminded me of a paper artist who is sometimes in the market and sure enough he was there at his table. He was sitting cutting designs with his cutting tool and discretely I took a photo of his wares but he noticed and called out, "Will you send me a copy?" What a difference. Please photograph my art! I took a few shots and hoped that some of them would be good since I wanted to please this gracious man by sending him a good photo. I asked for his card which he carefully folded for me and which showcases his technique and he asked me to email a photo. May I present ndavid, paper artist. Please click on the images to see them enlarged.

Thank you Mr David for allowing me to photograph your beautiful artwork. I'm afraid I was a little flustered after my experience at the paper store and then I was concentrating on taking photos. Only after I left did I realize that I should have bought something and that it would be a pleasure to buy something so carefully created and so beautiful. Next time I see you, I will.

And some of his detailed artwork, created from paper.

And more.

A little closer look.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE
UPDATE: If you came by and there were no images, I apologize. I don't know when they disappeared but I have now reloaded them. I cannot believe that I did anything so I am going to assume it was some technical problem with Blogger. I can still see the extra boxes from where they have disappeared and hopefully will fix this in time. Thank you for your patience.

Hi JMB,
It almost seems fortuitous that the lady in the first shop was so rude because otherwise you wouldn't have gotten the photographs of Mr. David and his paper work. Very nice story and photographs as always. Have a great weekend, Carver
The work of ndavid is great! What an old-fashioned way but very artistic to create wonderful things on paper.
To Paper Ya, sorry, you missed a free mention about the things you sell in your shop.
Thanks for sharing those wonderful paper art, JMB. Have a great weekend! :)
How wonderful to meet a gracious artist after your first experience!
I am a soap-maker. I make soap from scratch. Let me tell you, I have met some others that practice my craft who are MISERABLE, and others who are terrific!
Your photos of Mr. David's work are just PERFECT for the theme! I especially LOVE the train in the second photo. His work is so beautiful and a delight to see!
Oh, and like you, I think the other store wouldn't be seeing me much anymore after that cold shoulder....
Gosh, I would've welcomed you with open arms to photograph my work! Oh well, it was a pleasure to see the work of Mr. David. Very nice post indeed!
The Rocky Mountain Retreat
Nice. Happy hunting...
Those are nice pieces of artwork. David is indeed a great paper artist.
Very cool! Happy PHUNT
Ohhhhhhh NEAT! I would have gone nutso in there!
Hi! Thanks for being the first one to comment on my entry this week.
Thanks for sharing the works of that fabulous paper artist. I admire his exquisite paper art.
Wow. David sure makes beautiful paper art.
I do get objections from sales people and owners when I want to take a picture of their shops or wares. Usually I would walk out and if I had been their customer, I would not go back again.
It's not like I'm copying or stealing their ideas. Their products are printed on sales brochures and some even on their website.
They do miss an opportunity to showcase their products.
Happy Weekend JMB!
I wonder if your paper artist (the 2nd) sells on the web. His work is incredible! How lucky he is that you came by (and we are lucky too).
What a very creative man. Those are so amazing. Great photos too. Have a good weekend, and I hope he enjoyed his email.
These photos reminded me of myself... haha. I did quite a number to 3D cards for certain special occasions during my younger days. I did some paper architecture of flowers too with won me a few awards. Unfortunately that was years ago and I can't get hold of the photos or else I would have shared them out with all the photohunters. Nice shots here...love them all :)
Wow... thank you so much for sharing the special paper art work of Mr.David.I loved the train one....I have seen some great choices so far for today's theme. Baba
What a craftsman Mr. David is. His work looks very pretty and I'm glad he let you photograph him.
Those are great paper works. Beautiful I should say.
Mine is up too.
neat shots...love those cards...
mine is up at MY TWO CENTS WORTH hope you visit me.
Mr David's work is beautiful!!! I love this kind of art, it is very unique. I wouldn't go to that paper shop again!!
Beautiful and artistic take on the theme! Much better than the paper shop *wink*
Happy hunting and happy weekend
Thanks for your welcoming comments JMB. I have a funny picture that I would like to send to you, but I don't know your email address. Perhaps you could email me with your email address clutterbells@gmail.com
I liked the paper cut outs. I used to like to make those snowflake cut outs when you fold the paper and make symmetrical patterns.
Have a nice weekend.
oh, that's a very good opportunity for you to witness a paper artist in work! i love his products. :)
Paper Ya's rejection brought you to Mr. David's wonderful creations, and now we get to see them. A better outcome than planned. Isn't that often the way?
V.
Wowww, that is incredible work!!!! Thanks so much for sharing this with us as many of us would not see it otherwise. I'm happy for you to have met this kind and gifted man after the rude and ridiculous behavior in that paper store.
Wow - glad you went to the next place. The work is so great!!
Happy Weekend.
Hi jmb --
When you next visit Mr. David, perhaps you should tell him about your blog too? (Or are you too modest to do so? ;b)
Those are great pieces made by such a gracious man. Nice take on this week's theme. Happy weekend!
What a difference in attitude. Mr David's work is fabulous. I'm sure we all know now which shop we'd rather purchase goods in :o)
Those are some very cool examples of paper. My wife would love that store.
wow so nice of him "ndavid" because he share his talents and even given you a chance to take a actual shots..blessed him..nice entry.
mine is up too and got my linky too.
nice art works..thanks to you for sharing it and to "ndavid" also..happy hunting.
mine is up as well.
Wow, that is some beautiful work! He must have a very steady hand. Nice job.
Oh wow! Those are wonderful! Perfect use of the theme! :)
What a miserable lot they are in the paper store! I hope you will boycott it and that they will read this. However, the gentleman in the market seems charming and his work is so intricate and pretty.
I never cease to be amazed by the sheer stupidity of people! If you are running a shop, serving the public, wanting their money - why would you behave in such an ungracious manner? I would rethink going back as well.
On the other hand, the photographs of the artist's work are wonderful. I love people who are creative don't you? There is a shop in San Francisco that sells cards like that, hand made and lovely.
Thank you for sharing.
Awesome shots! That is some very creative work. Beautiful cards!
Do they often object to the photos, JMB? Or is it done surreptitiously?
JMB, I love Paper-Ya, and it's always one of the shops I visit when I go to Granville Island, but I can't believe how rude they were to you! Thank you for sharing Mr. David's work. I'm going to look for him the next time I'm there.
Don't you just love all the gorgeous silk scarves for sale as well? I buy at least one every time I'm there.
Cheers,
Josie
Paper-Ya have made a bad mistake. How miserable! But ndavid's work is beautiful and he is obviously a charming man. A pity he doesn't have a website we could visit.
I think that is a great story. I also think it's a total shame that paper ya doesn't want to promote their work...
Think viral marketing!!!
Anyhow - I think you got the best of it because the paperwork artist David get's more marketing than the other guy...
His work is wonderful!
I hope to go down and visit soon, seeing I live in the town. ;-)
Oh I would love love love to visit that store with all that paper! My twin is a paper-holic...she scrapbooks, and she has to have 1 sheet of every paper she sees! lol...My photo is up, please come and visit
Is this the paper "meme"?
Mmmm there is something "about" paper...
I used to have a housemate in a very large mixed house who was a schoolteacher.
I remember how excited she got at the beginning of autumn term buying all new coloured pens etc etc...
So I asked her and she admitted how she loved stationery.
Then it dawned on me that so do I and probably so do most people (I mean: what is it people most commonly "appropriate" from work?!)... it's just an "interest" we never seem to talk about!
Know what I mean...
I feel like I can spend all day in stationary (sp?) stores!
It's a shame about that first shop.
This is just way cool, one of the best uses for paper.
Wow! Isn't he talented.
A "raspberry" to that store owner! I would think twice about going back too, particularly seeing you've been a "regular" over the years, and explained your reasons for wanting to take some photos...and I know you would have explained your side well, jmb. Some people are just mean-spirited...they can't help themselves! ;)
Thanks to all of you for visiting my photo hunt pictures today and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
First time here. Like your title "Nobody Important". Just one question... even ourselves is not? hehe....
Anyway, Thanks for sharing nDavid's art! Very impressive! :)
Haven't been around for a while (which is why this comment is so late!) and didn't do a Photo Hunt entry for this subject but had planned to take a picture of one of Mr David's cards, purchased from him a few years back, which belongs to my daughter and sits very nicely on her mantelpiece. It is very similar to the one on the extreme left of the second photo.
