Saturday Photo Hunt ---- Classic

CLASSIC

So what's the first thing that springs to mind when you say Classic? Well for me, it's ancient Greece and Rome. That's one definition of Classic: of or pertaining to Ancient Greece or Roman cultures. While another definition is, Classic: a creation of the highest excellence. Combined in one object, the ancient Greek statue of the Venus de Milo fulfills both definitions. This beautiful piece stands in the Louvre Museum in Paris and all the photos in today's post are scanned from prints of photos I took on a trip to France in 1988.

Now for one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. Situated in Paris on the Île de la Cité, in the middle of the Seine River, it is the classic example of a cathedral.

The French word for Castle is Château and the region of France best known for its dozens of Châteaux is the Loire Valley. For me the classic one is Château de Chenonceau, seen below. This romantic château is built out over the River Cher and is surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Last but not least. What is the classic celebratory drink? Why Champagne of course and who invented Champagne? Dom Pérignon whose statue stands outside the Moët and Chandon headquarters at Épernay, France where we toured the cellars which are carved by hand out of chalky soil of the region. They stretch for 32 kms under the town and contain 40 million bottles of champagne.

Cheers! Cin cin! Salute! Proost! Skoal! Santé! Sláinte! LeChaim! Kanpai! Za vashe zdorov'ye!
and so on.

HAVE A VERY HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE

Great take on the theme JMB. Your photographs in this post definitely captured some great classics. I never would have thought of champagne but that is certainly the classic celebratory drink. I fear I like champagne too much to drink it very often. Wow, 40 million bottles of champagne. That's a lot of bubbly. I hope you have a great weekend.

Love the photos :)

I've been to France & only saw a bit of it. I've always wanted to see so much more of the country & your picts certainly are making me drool - wanting to

(40,000,000 bottles x 1,000,000 bubbles x 10 glasses per bottle = 400,000,000,000,000 bubbles = 400 trillion bubbles)

YIKES !!!

JMB, what a fabulous post. You should add your own name to the list. You are a classic too. :-)

When my daughter and I were at the Louvre, we took a photo of the Venus de Milo from the back, because no one ever seems to show that view, and it is just as beautiful. She and I were in the Louvre in 1988. We might have passed each other.

Wow,my daughter sitting beside me said,"Isn't it that's the Notre Dame?" See? even young children can recognize that famous structure, even from a different angle. Thank you for sharing your wonderful photos, jmb!

Have a great weekend :)

Very nice entry for this week, jmb. Re the Loire Valley: How difficult (or easy) is it to get there from Paris? Would love to go there some day...

I can't see Quasimodo.
Was he on holiday?

I think the Notre Dame is an imposing building, the one I really want to see is the Hagia Sophia.

Excellent photos Jmb! The Greeks were by far the most superior in their sculptures and architecture although the Notre Dame is also an exquisite building. Perfect photos for this theme.

Ha Belle Photo! ;-)
I must have been to those places.. I was very impressed by how they make champagne!
1988, it is time for another trip to Europe (though not a good deal for us Americans with the way the dollar is)ev

Ah, someone told me there was another picture of Chenonceau. Mine was taken this summer and from a non-standard angle. I love all your pictures. Thay've made me realise I really must make more of an effort to get back to Paris.
