Saturday Photo Hunt --- Narrow

NARROW

One of the things that towns in Italy are renowned for are their narrow streets, even the ones where cars can travel, however many are so narrow that they are effectively zone pedonali and walking is the only way to traverse them. Click to enlarge and get more detail.

Not only are the streets narrow in Italy but often the balconies are so narrow one can merely step out to take a breath of fresh air or perhaps grow a couple of geraniums in pots. The cerise bougainvillea always reminds me of Sicily and of course the Australia of my youth where it grew in abundance. Although it's a gaudy nasty prickly plant in reality.

This lovely little pedestrian only via was in the little town of Lipari, on the island of Lipari off the coast of Sicily.

When I was looking through my Sicily album for photos to scan I came across these special balconies which are not quite so narrow but are very interesting. I thought I would show them as well. The city of Noto is very famous for its baroque balconies and these are fine examples.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE

Beautiful photographs from Italy for the narrow theme. I've never been to Italy but I have been to France and was charmed by the narrow streets there. The baroque balcony is so delightful. I enjoyed your beautiful images in this post. I love the way bougainvillea looks but I have family who have it at a coastal vacation home who mentioned it's hard to prune without it fighting back . Sorry you are having trouble with your email server.

I just love the narrow streets all through Europe - no straight streets, but lots of winding roads and paths! In London there are streets so narrow you can touch the houses on both sides at once! Love your photos!!
Good job!'happy weekend

The narrow lanes are pretty amazing that it nicely fit only 1 car at a time :) But those shops and houses really look nice :)

I think I'm sure, in narrow dainty lanes, there are quite alot of shops that sell great stuffs!! :) heehee... Walking through them is fun and mysterious in a way.

I love the Italian way of beautifying the balcony with flowering plants. It's awesome.

Suddenly a wild thought came into my mind when I saw your narrow street photos. What a great way to court someone from the opposite building! You can practically put a plank between the buildings and walk over for dates. How convenient.. hehe :P

If you have the time, do check out my another interpretation at http://www2.crizlai.com/2008/02/02/photo-hunters-narrow/

Due to significant health problems in the household we didn't get to have a holiday in 2007 but things are now looking positively better so I've been pondering brochures trying to decide where to go. Now I've seen your lovely photos I'm inspired to visit Sicily, somewhere we've been wanting to visit for a long time.

My heart will have to wait to be left in San Francisco! (And if Sicily is as good as it looks that may be a long time).

Wow, they really do make full use of space, don't they?

They may be narrow but they're really beautiful.

Italy is one of the beautiful places I aspire to visit someday. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. The baroque balconies look so romantic.

Thanks for visiting my photo. Regarding your question, the green tomatoes are good as ripe. They are picked while they are green because they are going to be sold to the market. They will ripen on their own.

I've never been to Italy, but I do want to see Rome.

Is there no official designation of streets as to which vehicles they are suitable for?

I almost posted a photo of a narrow street in Sicily - a friend stood in front of it to show the contrast. It was so narrow you almost had to walk sideways! Great idea.

So much effort and attention to put into something liek a balcony! You don't see that these days I'm afraid.

Lovely little lanes and the colour is so summery.

Sorry to be so late visiting your Narrow Photo Hunt. I have so enjoyed the weekly tour of the world. Sicily is forty-some years in the past for me, and I doubt that I will visit it again, but the character (and the characters) of the place will always be with me.
