As a young child and a teenager my daughter would only allow her hair to be cut very rarely and then it was a battle royal. Let me tell you this is still a pretty rare occurrence, even now she is 41.
In fact she has been on a two year schedule for the past six years as she now grows and donates her hair to Locks of Love:
which is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
She first heard about the organization from her students and she decided to join the challenge. This is the third time she has done it so when she arrived at my hairdresser's, who has been providing her annual haircut since she was a teenager, Shirley knew exactly what to do. It is easier to send it off in a braid so the hair is measured, for it has to be at least ten inches in length and then braided.
She says even the boys get into the act and grow the required length of hair and several other teachers have done it as well.
The result. I can't believe I have a daughter who is going grey but she is. Fortunately her hair is still very thick and wavy.
Unbraided and stretched to remove the curl it is probably about 13 inches or more but it takes between six to ten ponytails to make a wig. Now to put it in a padded envelope and send it off and the whole growing process begins again.

A great cause and your daughter's new cut looks lovely.
What a wonderful idea of donating the hair. Am happy I have boys with me now JMB, still with youngest, it is a task and a half to do his hair, even with clippers.
I love the new hairstyle - should be much more comfortable in summer, too.
My mum hates the idea that her little boy is fifty.

That's great that she does that regularly JMB. I'm especially glad you mentioned that she was going gray because that's an issue I wasn't sure about. I donated almost 2 feet of hair to locks for love about 3 1/2 years ago when it was very long and all brown. I went to very short cut.
My hair is long enough now that I may have enough to donate again but I vaguely remembered something about them not wanting gray.
I probably don't have my facts straight since someone I mentioned it to didn't think that was an issue and they pointed out that it's mostly my roots that are coming in with some gray not the rest. I'll have to make an appointment with the person who did it last time because she sends them in to the locks for love organization and knows what they want. Good post.
I used to have long hair but that organization didn't exist then. Now it's too much of a bother to grow it long. But maybe I should try. I really like your daughter's hairdo - so thick and naturally wavy! :D
