Halloween decorations on the mantle
Yes, I know. Like Christmas, after the huge anticipation, there is nothing so over as Halloween. But I hope you can bear one more post.
This year my Thursday Walking Group has had the pleasure of the company of a member who has been here on sabbatical with her husband from Australia. As a pediatric psychiatrist she expected to be working here herself and made what she thought were all the necessary arrangements beforehand, with a great deal of effort and expense. However thwarted on all fronts she finally came to terms with the fact that this year was to be one of non-professional pursuits and I don't believe she has missed walking with us once unless travelling out of town. We have enjoyed her presence very much and were delighted when she asked us to lunch after last Thursday's walk. Where she lives Halloween is not the big deal it is here but she has been taken greatly by it. I even took her to see the decorated for Halloween house and she then took her teen-aged daughter back to see it. So she wanted to host a Halloween lunch for the group and here are some photos of the event.

My friend wanted to walk with us so she made it a simple lunch of a very delicious pumpkin soup with scones and cheese and crackers.

These extremely tasty cheese scones were a very big hit
But the pièce de résistance was the desert array. My friend's teen-aged daughter is a wonderful baker and has won competitions for her baking. How amazing is that cake? A delicious chocolate cake with a very rich ganache icing.

How creepy are these shortbread "fingers" with their whole
almond nails? Yes she made the teeth too.

All in all it was a very successful occasion, enjoyed by us all and I think that these ScotAussies or AussieScots have certainly mastered the art of celebrating Halloween, don't you?

Our friend will be returning to Australia in a few short weeks and we will miss her but I am sure she is anxious to get back to her home and career after her nine month sojourn in Canada. Hopefully we will meet again, perhaps there will be a professional conference here that she would not want to miss or maybe I will have to take a trip Down Under in the not too distant future.

My goodness all that work for Halloween. We went down to see the fireworks that the village fire department put on but apart from that there was not much. Not that I have ever bothered with it much. No kids at the door up here of course.

I must admit, I tend to ignore this time of year. Halloween I'll go out on at a push, but I boycott bonfire night.
That sounds like a great halloween lunch and the fingers were amazing. Wild dessert spread. The autumn leaves are so beautiful in your shot of the view.
The fingers and teeth are most creative as is the cake - I would have almost, note I said almost, been afraid to wreck it :)

I went shopping here at one of the large chain supermarkets and found that one of those popular pumpkins that the Americans use for carving, was priced at $20 AUD...no way was I buying four of them just so the boys could participate in pumpkin carving.
My walking group is never as much fun as this.
