Saturday Photo Hunt --- Ruin(ed)

RUIN(ED)

I think I did all my ruin visiting in pre-digital camera days. So these are scanned and not such excellent photos I'm afraid. They may have been seen on this blog before but not for photo hunt so I hope you don't mind.

This is probably one of the most famous ruins of them all. No, not JMB, who was in her prime, in those days, in front of the Colosseum in Rome, on her honeymoon in 1961.

One of my favourite ruins although not shown at its best here, the Villa Romana at Piazza Armerina in Sicily. The furnaces where the wood was burned to heat the water both for the baths and the heating system of the villa itself.

The Roman Greek theatre at Taormina Sicily below

A view of the approach to the same theatre

This is the famous Greek theatre at Syracuse in Sicily

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE

That's such a lovely honeymoon photo - thank you so much for sharing that.

Wonderful ruins. The Romans were incredible engineers.

Hi JMB --

I did the bulk of my ruin-visiting in pre-digital camera days. Unlike you, however, still haven't thought to transfer them to digital. So no ruins from older times from me... :S

I thought of using images closer to these classical/classic ones of yours but opted to tell more of the island story.

You look great in your pic. The Colosseum is something isn't it?

It always seems to me photos are good to remind you of places you have been but they never do the experience justice somehow.

I remember thinking of all those poor people who knew they might not come out of the arena alive. The crowds baying for blood. The holes in the structure of the outside arches put there later for stalls and awnings.

The cp;dness and weight of history.

Hi

Lovely photos.

I came to say thank you for replying so nicely to my Peace day globe recently - making you hum Cat Stevens all day. :-)

What amazed me, looking at your profile to find your blog again, is that not only are you born the same year as my mom,but you both married the same year as well! My parents honeymooned at Victoria falls in Africa.
