NAUTICAL
NAUTICAL
Nautical: adjective, relating to ships, sailing or sailors

The Star of India was launched in 1863 and is the oldest ship in the world that still maintains a regular sailing schedule. It forms part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, a collection of various types of historic boats which can be seen moored at the Embarcadero.

The HMS Surprise is a magnificent replica of a late 18th century Royal Navy frigate and she was used in the production of the film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Also in the same museum.

Wings, built in 1931, is one of the Pacific Class wooden hulled boats, racing yachts designed locally and for southern California waters.

USS Midway was the longest serving aircraft carrier in the United States fleet, from its commissioning in 1945 to its service in Desert Storm in 1991. In 2004 it opened as a museum at its final mooring place in San Diego harbour.
But I guess you expected to see some boats in Vancouver. How about this one with an opulent powerboat, a dragon boat, a False creek mini ferry and a black sail boat, all in the same photo.

Finally, sailing at its leanest and meanest. A kitesurfer sailing along on a windy day in Vancouver. Yes stretching the term nautical in this last one. Do click to enlarge this one.
A selection of ships from my archives, some seen here before but not for Photo Hunt

These are all great choice JMB. The Star of India is an amazing ship. There is something about the old sailing vessels that are so romantic to me although I know that it would be a lot of hard work to be one of the sailors operating them. I like how you showed the various styles down to the kite surfer. Happy Weekend!
I would love to set sail on one of those beautiful ships. The blue skies are stunning too.
I am going to love this week's theme -- great photos!
When I was young I wanted to sail. I worked summers on the Great Lakes Ore Boats.
I'd love to sail on the first two.
That is a great selection of ships!
Wishing you a great weekend too.
JMB, this is such a wonderful collection - I'm amazed at the variety you've shown. Great post!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Prior to being in San Diego the Star of India was berthed in Lahaina, Maui. I've seen it in both places. Lovely photos. I am a sucker for ships.
Great selection, jmb. And that last photo just takes the breath away! :b
Great photos! I love how you managed to capture 3 totally different type of boats in the Vancouver waters.

You sure have some great shots this week JMB. I'm still hoping that another warship will berth over here as I missed visiting the last one.
Happy Valentine's Day!

An impressive collection. That last looks like something I would have enjoyed if I were a year or two younger :)
WHat a wonderful set of shots jmb I would love to see HMS Surprise in the wood. I love teh Aubrey/Maturin books but the original surprise had an nteresting career too. Happy Weekend

love your take on the last one, also
Very pretty. I love old and old looking wooden boats...
I've always wanted to ride on one of those old-time sailing ships.
Great selections for this week. I just love the elegance of those old sailing ships.

1863, huh? Very interesting ship. I like that one the best, but all were great. Thanks for stopping by, and have a great weekend.
What a great collection of shots! :)
I love the one with the kite surfer!
Happy Valentine! :)
Mine is up too!

An absolutely beautiful sequence of shots.!
I love old sailing ships!
Great shots for the theme. :) I really enjoyed them.
have a great weekend!
Wonderful collection of nautical photos, JMB. LOVE the tall ships and the humor of the last photo!
Hope your Valentine's Day was delightful!
I love the look of the big ships. We have a "Hunter" sailboat down in Florida. Hubby loves it. I appreciate the boats/ships but get too seasick to go sailing. Have tried every cure, but nothing works very well. Oh, well, appreciate from afar. Neat post. D
those are really beautiful ships. We passed by historic boats in Embarcadero the other year but was too preoccupied to stop and check them out, now am regretting it.
Love the photos of the HMS Surprise and the Indian boat, amazing it is still in use after all these years. Very nice photos JMB, wishing you a great and safe weekend :)
I fell in love with your first photo - and then each of the others! That kite surfer is incredible!
What a grand post. The Surprise was also known as Nemisis because she carried the party that arrested the men who committed the worst mutiny in naval history.
brilliant! I realy enjoyed the nautical photographic tour!
This is one of my most favorite cities in America...for personal, sentimental reasons....and I've been aboard the Star of India several times. Beautiful photos.
Thanks for visiting me and viewing my Photo Hunt blog yesterday!!
Great pics JMB. I did like the Star of India. Is it a tea clipper? It reminds me of the Cutty Sark as it used to be.
Love your nautical pics!
Kathy
