Saturday Photo Hunt --- Black

Now a photo of something totally black is not terribly interesting usually, but this is one I took of the night sky in the late Autumn of 2008 is very interesting. Click to enlarge for a better view. It was a rare astrological occurrence when a new crescent moon formed a close triangle with the two planets, Venus and Jupiter. Of course they are not really close to each other or the earth in actuality. The moon is the brightest, closest and smallest of the three and is 252,000 miles away. Venus, the second brightest, closest and smallest, is 94 million miles away, while Jupiter is 540 million miles away.

Saturday Photo Hunt ---- Addiction

I don't smoke and I don't drink alcohol but I do have a mighty powerful addiction. It consumes my life like any other addiction and I find the only way to curb it is to avoid it totally, well save for the occasional overindulgence. I call it my Achilles' heel. Yes Chocolate. I can taste it in mouth, just writing this post. Luckily there is none in the house.

But I can drool, can't I? The perfect chocolate cake.

No, maybe this one is the perfect one.

Sad to say, I do not have photos of the perfect chocolate bar and none in the house to photograph. Then there are these and these. Why am I torturing myself? So what is your addiction?

Party in the Western World?

Posted for Moggs Tigerpaw, our roving SL and RL reporter.

It's been ages since I last wrote a post. I have been really busy.

This is one I had in my head for a while. Regular readers may have guessed I like music, especially 'popular' music.

But you can tell a thing or two from chart tracks. I am thinking especially about Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA"

Now if you never heard it, then it sounds semi biographical (for her not me). If it isn't it could be.

The song is about a teen girl's experience traveling.

The first part deals with the singer arriving at LAX and getting a taxi ride. She's feeling out of place and insecure... until she hears a comfortably familiar track on the cab radio and she feels much happier. She thinks 'They are playing my song; it's a party in the USA'

Then later she is in a club and she feels awkward and out of place, being dressed differently, more casually and dancing different steps. Then the DJ plays another familiar favorite and she feels much more at home.

She realizes or is reminded when she hears the song that "it's a party in the USA". It could be being played anywhere in the USA

The familiar songs put things in perspective. The Whole song carries on this theme and is sort of catchy too.

What is it about? Our common culture. The things all US citizens have in common. But in reality it goes much further than that in slightly diluted. Further than North America. Maybe even further than amongst the English speaking nations.

Because what is true for Miley Cyrus is also true for you and me too. Yes there are little differences from place to place, one hometown to another, but it's still all within one big overarching culture we are all pretty much at home in... If we choose to be.

Just to prove a point one of the songs she mentions is "A Britney song".

How many of you don't know which Britney? or couldn't think of one of her songs? Not many I figure.

How many of you knew LAX is the International Air Transport Association airport code for Los Angeles International Airport. Quite a few I would guess.

Now... bonus points for London Heathrow's and San Francisco International Airport's codes... without looking them up.

"So I put my hands up
They're playin' my song
The butterflies fly away...

Noddin' my head like - Yeah
Movin' my hips like - Yeah

I got my hands up
They're playing my song
I know I'm gonna be okay
Yeah - It's a Party in the USA"

Saturday Photo Hunt --- Covered

Covered is a pretty amorphous theme this week, but Spring is here and it's cherry blossom time so here is my Kwanzan cherry tree covered with the double pink blossoms which are a sight to behold at this time of the year. Click to see it in all its glory

The scenes below, in which the floor is covered with sawdust, was a project during the 2010 Winter Olympics where they were carving several totem poles at Granville Island. The old ways are gone as they make full use of power tools, although I am sure they finish them with hand tools.

And another

Saturday Photo Hunt --- Vertical

I took this photo yesterday on a very windy Vancouver day. It was amazing to see the flag flying straight out for once, instead of hanging down. This morning I realized it was perfect for today's theme. Fresh snow on the mountains too.

Another photo from yesterday shows something which should be vertical but is not. This was one of three boats washed up on the beach during the night, since they broke free from their moorings in the 100km/hr winds. They are live-on boats so the occupants were rather scared by it all, but all will be well at the next high tide when they can be refloated.

Saturday Photo Hunt --- Sweet

Now this is my Japanese friend's idea of a sweet thing to end a delicious meal. I have no idea what it actually is, probably some bean curd based delight.

But this is my idea of a sweet thing to end a delicious meal!

Now that is sweet!
